14U finishes season going 1-2 at State

PIERRE - The Brookings Bombers 14U team capped off the season with a 1-2 record at the State Tournament in Pierre over the weekend. 

The Bombers lost 18-1 in their first game of the weekend on Friday but then bounced back with a 3-2 win over Yankton later in the day. They would then end the season with a 19-4 loss to Tea on Saturday. Brookings finished the season with a 17-25 record.

Friday

Pierre 18, Brookings 1

Pierre scored three or more runs in each of the four innings that were played.

They scored three runs in the top of the first. The runs came from a single, a double and a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Pierre then scored five runs in the top of the second. They would score two runs from two bases loaded walks and then an RBI single made it 6-0. A batter was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and a sacrifice fly extended the lead to 8-0.

Three more runs in the top of the third made it 11-0. Pierre scored on two RBI singles and an RBI triple.

Seven runs in the top of the fourth made it 18-0. Pierre scored a run on an error and then two runs from bases loaded walks made it 14-0. A two-run single pushed the lead to 16 and then a two-run double made it 18-0.

Jess Johnson scored on a Mason Hegerfeld ground out for the only run of the game for the Bombers. Weston Diers had the only hit of the game for Brookings.

Brookings 3, Yankton 2

Yankton scored a run in the bottom of the first but then two runs from Brookings in the top of the sixth were the difference in the game.

The Lakers’ run in the first inning came on an error. Diers then hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth to tie the game.

Yankton scored a run on a fielder’s choice to earn back the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Diers then knocked in another run in the sixth to tie the game. This time it was a double that sent home John Romsa. Hegerfeld then hit Diers home with a double of his own to give Brookings a 3-2 lead going into the final inning. 

Romsa then struck out the side to end the game and give the Bombers the win. He pitched a complete game and gave up two unearned runs on two hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks.

Brookings had six hits as a team. Diers was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Hegerfeld was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Romsa and Elias Wagner were each 1-for-3.

Saturday

Tea 19, Brookings 4

12 runs in the bottom of the third inning ended the Bombers season as they lost via the 15-run rule.

Tea led 4-1 after the first inning. Diers hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. Tea then scored a run on a sacrifice fly and then took the lead on a two-run double. A run on a passed ball made it 4-1.

The Titans scored two runs in the bottom of the second. Tea scored two runs on two passed balls and then a sacrifice fly made it 7-1.

Wagner scored on a passed ball and then an RBI double from Diers made it 7-3. Diers then scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 7-4.

An RBI single and two bases loaded walks stretched the lead to 10-4. Then a bases-clearing double and two RBI singles made it 15-4. Another bases loaded walk and a run from a passed ball made it 17-4. Then a run from a single and a run from an error ended the game.

Brookings had three hits. Diers was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Romsa was 1-for-2.
