Baseball Briefs: A look at how each Brookings team is doing

The Brookings baseball teams are in full swing in their summer season. Some teams have had their struggles so far this season, but let's take a look at where every team is at with a little over a week left in June.

Senior Legion

The Bandits had another tough week as they won one out of four games. The Bandits split a doubleheader with Renner on Tuesday, losing game one 3-2 and winning game two 8-1. They then were shutout in two games against Yankton on Thursday, losing 3-0 and 4-0.

Brookings had nine hits in their lone win during the week. Talon Hyde was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Jude Meendering was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jase Bauer was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Cooper Schneider was 2-for-3. Baker Hanson was 1-for-4 and Tane Friedrich had an RBI without a hit.

Noah Lease picked up the win on the mound for the Bandits in the win over Renner. Lease pitched five innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Schneider pitched the final two innings and gave up one hit and no runs with four strikeouts and two walks.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Brookings is 5-7 on the season. The Bandits played a doubleheader at Sioux Falls East on Tuesday night, but the games will be played after the Brookings Beacon deadline. The Bandits are scheduled to play in the Jim Peterson Fargo/Moorhead Invitational this weekend.

Junior Legion Red

The Junior Legion Red Team won one of four games as well over the weekend. The Red Chutes lost a doubleheader in Fargo on Friday, losing 5-4 and 7-4. Brookings would then split a doubleheader with Yankton on Sunday, winning game one 3-2 and losing game two 7-6.

All five runs in game one of Sunday's doubleheader were scored in the fifth inning. The Bucks scored their two runs on a single in the top of the inning. Eli Ellsworth then scored on an error in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1. Kuddyer Baugher would then hit Grayson Wagner home with a triple to tie the game and then he scored on a single from Mason Burghardt to give the Chutes the lead. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

Brookings had just three hits in the win. Baugher and Burghardt were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Wagner was 1-for-3.

Wesden Van Ede pitched a complete game for Brookings. He gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Brookings is now 4-12 on the year. They'll play next on June 30 when they play a doubleheader at Brandon Valley starting at 12 p.m.

Junior Legion Black

The Brookings Junior Legion Black Team lost four games in a tournament in Lakeville, Minn., over the weekend. The Chutes lost to Lakeville North 5-3 on Friday and then fell 16-4 to TCU Junior Legion, which is a team based in the Montgomery, Le Center and Lonsdale areas of Minnesota. a team out of Stillwater, Minn., 8-5.

In Brookings first game, which was their closest defeat, the Chutes had five hits. Lincoln Helmbolt was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Dario McSweeney was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Hayden Jones and Parker Witte were each 1-for-3 and Jace Jaacks was 1-for-4. Ty Johnson had an RBI without a hit.

Andrew Heinze pitched the first four and two thirds innings in that game and he gave up one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Mack Nelson and Johnson each pitched two thirds of an inning. Nelson gave up four earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk. Johnson gave up no runs and two hits with no strikeouts or walks.

Brookings is now 7-12 this season. The Chutes will play in the Sioux Falls Invitational this weekend.

16U

The Brookings Bullets fell to 0-13 with two doubleheader sweeps. The Bullets lost 13-5 and 14-2 to Renner on Wednesday and then lost 19-0 and 9-1 to Marshall (Minn.) on Monday night.

Brookingsí best offensive output of the week came in game one against Renner where the Bullets scored five runs. However, they only had three hits. Jaxson Engler was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Jasper Pitts and Kale Weiker were each 1-for-2. Warner Carroll had an RBI without a hit.

The Bullets will look to get their first victory on Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Watertown. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

14U

The Brookings Black 14U Team snapped a four-game losing streak on Monday with a doubleheader sweep of Aberdeen in Brookings. Brookings won 10-9 in game one and 6-5 in game two and both victories were of the walk off variety.

The first victory came after Brookings scored three runs in the bottom of seventh to walk things off. John Romsa hit Owen Rounds home with a double to cut Aberdeen's lead to 9-8. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Mason Hegerfeld to tie the game. Bennett Porter then came to the plate and he hit Weston Diers home with a single to win the game.

Brookings had 12 hits in the win. Hegerfeld was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Elias Wagner was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Diers was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Porter was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Rounds was 2-for-3 and Romsa was 2-for-4. Jax Sonnenburg and Cade Jaacks were each 1-for-3.

After giving up a four-run lead in the top of the sixth in game two, Brookings scored one run in the bottom of the inning to walk things off again. Jay KC came to the plate with two outs and Sonnenburg was on third. KC hit the ball to the third baseman but he was unable to get an out and Sonnenburg scored the winning run.

Weston Diers and Porter were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Romsa was 1-for-3 with an RBI and KC was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sonnenburg and Jess Johnson were each 1-for-2 and Tegan Jensen was 1-for-3. Owen Rounds had an RBI without a hit.

Brookings moved to 8-11 with the two victories. They'll play in the Bob Tershinski Tournament in Yankton this weekend.

13U

The Brookings Red 13U Team had the weekend off but were swept in a doubleheader against Harrisburg on Wednesday. Brookings lost 14-4 in game one and 12-2 in game two.

Brookings started the season 6-0 but are now 12-7. They'll play at West Central on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then will play in the Vern Jack Tournament in Aberdeen this weekend.

13/14U

The Brookings White 13/14U Team had a busy week as they played eight games. It was a tough week though as they went 2-6. Brookings split a doubleheader with Watertown on Wednesday and then won one of four games in the Sioux Falls Scheels Slam. They would then cap off the week with a doubleheader sweep loss to Aberdeen.

Brookings beat Watertown 4-2 in game one and there were no player stats available for that game. They then beat Woodbury (Minn.) in their lone win over the weekend.

Brookings had 13 hits in that victory. James McGuire was 4-for-4 with an RBI and William Myers was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jaxon Jones was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Rocco Murano was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Bentley Prosser and Noah Hammann were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ryker Van Helst was 2-for-4 and Logan Schaar was 1-for-4.

Brookings White is now 5-18 this season. Brookings will host the Brookings Auto Mall Classic this weekend. Their first game is Friday at 6 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field against a team from Gillette, Wyo.
