Brookings "Buy Nothing"

Brookings area residents can share useable items with neighbors via Buy Nothing Brookings on Facebook.

This page, which has Brookings area administrators, offers members a chance to give and receive, along with sharing or lending items. The group does not buy or sell; rather, users can request or offer items, including maternity and baby items; furniture and decor; household supplies; hygiene items; clothing; moving boxes; and much more.

The group is a local variation of the Buy Nothing Project. For more information, visit http://buynothingproject.org and look for Buy Nothing Brookings on Facebook.

The City of Brookings will hold its Bulky Item Pickup program starting April 8, when residents may begin placing items on boulevards. Items must be sorted and separated into three piles: metals, branches and bulky items.

According to the City of Brookings website, items not accepted include paint, batteries, waste oil, chemicals, electronics, and explosives. In addition, electronic waste is not accepted for pick-up, but residents can drop these items off for free at the landfill April 13-18. Household refuse, cardboard, and grass and leaves must be placed in the green garbage carts, blue recycling carts, and brown yard waste carts, respectively.

Also not accepted for curbside pickup are piles of remodeling material, including concrete; tires; and items containing freon such as refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners.

The last day to place items on boulevards is Sunday, April 12. On Monday, April 13, City crews will begin pickup.
