A structure fire left a machine shed and its contents a likely total loss on Monday afternoon, according to a release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Department.

First responders were called to the scene at 3026 Sunnyview Drive — just outside city limits and just northeast of the intersection of Medary Ave. and 210th Street — to find a metal pole barn fully engulfed in flames.

Fire crews worked on the blaze for more than 3.5 hours to extinguish the fire and conduct overhaul and cleanup operations.

The building, owned by David and Kristina Bauer, was a shop and garage area that housed multiple vehicles.

The investigation was ongoing and a damage estimate was not available yet Tuesday morning, according to Brookings County Assistan Sheriff David Biteler.

Fire crews responded from Brookings, Aurora, Volga, Bruce, Elkton, Sinai and Arlington.

Also on the scene were the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, the Brookings Police Department and Brookings Ambulance.

No cause of the fire was immediately known and the blaze is still under investigation by the Brookings Fire Department, South Dakota State Fire Marshal and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Department.
