International Ice Cream Social welcomes newcomers

The 5 th Annual International Ice Cream Social will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Good Roots and Gardens, 3712 Medary Avenue. This family-friendly event, designed to welcome new international faculty, students and their families to Brookings, is free and open to the public. Nearly 450 people attended last year’s event.

As we prepare for the school year, it’s time to welcome new international faculty, staff, students and their families to the Brookings community.

The Brookings Multicultural Center is collaborating with South Dakota State University International Student & Scholar Engagement to host the 5th Annual International Ice Cream Social at Good Roots and Gardens, 3712 Medary Avenue, on Wednesday, August 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. This family-friendly event is free and open to the public.

Volunteers will be serving SDSU ice cream and transportation is available from campus to Good Roots Farm and Gardens, free of charge thanks to SDSU International Student & Scholar Engagement. Buses will run every half-hour from the Student Union East to Good Roots beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“This event truly highlights the cooperation that exists between our university and our community,” said Kirsten Linke, director of International Student & Scholar Engagement at South Dakota State University. “It is an excellent opportunity to meet new people, learn about our community, other cultures and enjoy music and games.” Kids can play soccer, feed the goats and play in the bouncy house.

More than 20 vendors will showcase the services they offer to support the newcomers’ academic/professional success and to help them and their families become part of the Brookings community. The vendors include health care and child services, recreation and art programs, businesses and nonprofits.

This event is made possible through in-kind and monetary donations by our host, Good Roots Farm and Gardens, Brookings Taekwondo, Brookings Park and Recreation Department, Hy-Vee, Brookings Regional Growth Alliance and First Bank & Trust.

“We are grateful for the support we receive from our sponsors, the community and our campus
partners,” said Brookings Multicultural Center President Marilyn Hildreth. “That is what makes
Brookings a special place to live.”
