BROOKINGS — In honor of Juneteenth, the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings Human Rights Commission are co-hosting two educational events to bring awareness and prompt community conversation
On June 10 at 6 p.m., Dwana Bradley from Iowa Juneteenth Observance will present “Freedom Then, Freedom Now, Freedom Forward: The Journey of Juneteenth.” Bradley is a mother, community leader, educator, and media professional based in Des Moines.
On June 24 at 5:30 p.m., there will be a screening of the documentary, “Slavery By Another Name,” followed by a community discussion. This 90-minute documentary challenges one of Americans’ most cherished assumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. ased on Douglas A. Blackmon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, the film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in the South in 1865, thousands of African Americans were pulled back into forced labor with shocking force and brutality.
