BROOKINGS — Menards plans to open an outlet in Brookings near the new development where Target and Aldi opened earlier this year.
According to the City Council agenda released Friday, the City will take official action on Tuesday night to sell just shy of 30 acres north of the Target and Aldi development to a “large retailer.”
The resolution itself and sources confirmed to The Beacon that the retailer is Menards. The Wisconsin-based home improvement chain is headquartered in Eau Claire and operates more than 340 stores, primarily in the Upper Midwest. It’s privately owned by founder John Menard and is well known for its jingle and television advertisements.
The City Council will vote on selling 29.5 acres to the retailer at a purchase price of $4.50 per square foot or a total of $5,390,550.
Development in the area east and north of the I-29 exit 130 in Brookings has boomed in the last year, spurred by the city’s sale of land there to Target and Aldi, plus a second Kwik Star location that opened earlier this month.
